Peace by PEACE

Peace by PEACE is a conflict resolution skill development program for elementary school students. Volunteer teachers offer a year-long curriculum, fostering ways of resolving differences by communicating, understanding different points of view, and learning together. Weekly one-hour sessions take place on Friday afternoons at partner schools and a family shelter.

Human Rights Institute (HRI)

The Human Rights Institute serves as the focal point of international human rights education, scholarship and practice at Columbia Law School. The Institute currently focuses on a number of key themes, and, throughout the year, hosts a wide array of symposia, lectures, and other events to bring practitioners and scholars together.

Mediation Clinic

The Mediation Clinic gives students the opportunity to develop skills that are important to effective problem solving and wise lawyering. In particular, students explore the rapidly developing field of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) while providing much-needed services to people in conflict.

Social Justice Initiatives (SJI)

The Social Justice Initiatives program demonstrates Columbia Law School’s belief that public interest experience should be part of the professional life of every Columbia student and graduate.  SJI presents speakers and panels, connects students and graduates with job, fellowship and pro bono opportunities, works with student groups, and counsels individuals interested in public interest law.

Center for Human Rights Documentation & Research

The Center for Human Rights Documentation and Research supports the community of teachers, researchers, and law and social justice advocates working in the multidisciplinary sphere of Human Rights. The Center develops global collections—primary and secondary resources, as well as archival collections and internal records from human rights organizations—and enhances the visibility and accessibility of these collections through high-profile programs, collaborative projects and library services.

Master of Science Program on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (NECR)

The Master of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution is the only graduate degree program in conflict resolution in New York City. It combines theory and applied skills practice to prepare graduate students to develop practical models for negotiating and resolving disputes among parties with differing (or seemingly differing) objectives and needs. The graduate program’s skill development philosophy is founded on a commitment to interactive, dialogue-based methods of managing and resolving conflict.

Columbia University Systems Science Program (CUSSP)

The mission of the Columbia University Systems Science Program (CUSSP) is to create a home for systems science at Columbia, to develop shared systems science curricula, to nurture interdisciplinary systems science scholars, to promote novel applications of existing methods, and to advance systems science methodologies. CUSSP is a joint venture between the Mailman School of Public Health (MSPH) and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) that brings together scholars to advance the study of how many health problems arise from the interplay of social and biological contexts in complex urban environments.

Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies (SIWPS)

The Institute of War and Peace Studies was founded in 1951 under the sponsorship of Dwight D. Eisenhower during his tenure as president of Columbia University. Eisenhower created the Institute to promote an understanding of the “disastrous consequences of war upon man’s spiritual, intellectual, and material progress.” The Institute is one of the foremost research centers on international relations in the country.

Center for International Conflict Resolution (CICR)

The CICR contributes to the resolution of international deadly conflict through research, education and practice. The center strives to increase understanding of international conflicts through innovative, collaborative research and is committed to offering courses that disseminate knowledge about conflicts and their causes, and responds directly to the expressed needs of parties involved in ongoing conflicts, empowering individuals and organizations to address conflict constructively.

Initiative For Policy Dialogue (IPD)

The Initiative for Policy Dialogue works to broaden dialogue and explore trade-offs in development policy by bringing the best ideas in development to policymakers facing globalization’s complex challenges and opportunities. IPD helps countries analyze the complex policy trade-offs they face and provides them with access to a broader range of economic solutions that promote democratic, equitable, and sustainable development.

United Nations Studies Program (UNSP)

The United Nations Studies Program promotes teaching, training, and career development in the pursuit of multilateral solutions to global dilemmas. The Program brings together scholars and practitioners to address the main priorities of the UN – security, development, human rights and the environment – strengthening synergies between the Columbia community and those within the UN system.

Morton Deutsch International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution (MD-ICCCR)

The International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution is an innovative center committed to developing knowledge and practice to promote constructive conflict resolution, effective cooperation, and social justice.  The ICCCR partners with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities to create tools and environments from which conflicts can be resolved constructively and just and peaceful relationships can develop.  The Center’s training and work with the community is rooted in scholarship.
