Education and Training Program on Genocide Prevention

Columbia University and George Mason University have been collaborating to operationalize genocide prevention as a critical component of normative discourse and to develop viable policies and practices at the state level under the leadership of Dr. Peter T. Coleman and Dr. Andrea Bartoli. EGGP is an advanced education and training program on the prevention of genocide for mid-level government career personnel from the 192 United Nations member states who have exhibited extraordinary leadership potential. The program aims to inspire dedicated government leaders from around the world and equip them with the knowledge and skills to be effective agents for the prevention of genocide.

Integration of Knowledge and Practice through a “Network of Networks”

We believe that the key to the next phase of operationalization is to integrate genocide prevention efforts and actors at the international, regional, national and local levels. With the multiple networks of genocide prevention emerging and already in place, we need to link these dispersed and loosely connected networks and create synergies and cross-fertilization of our knowledge and practices, while respecting the autonomy and creativity of each. In partnership with the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, we aim to create such space to:

  • Integrate the multitude of genocide prevention actors, workshops and fora through a “network of networks” approach with a view to domesticating public early warning initiatives at the local level, in places such as Central Africa in coordination with the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR);

AC4 supports the continued interdisciplinary, pedagogical, and technological development of the program.
