Sven Koopmans (Netherlands) is Senior Mediation Expert in the United Nations Mediation Standby Team. He specializes in peace negotiations and process design, combining experience as a diplomat and political advisor with expertise in international law. He was the lead mediation advisor to the head of the United Nations Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), developing a negotiation framework and conducting shuttle diplomacy in the collaborative effort with the African Union, ECOWAS and the European Union, leading to the 2013 Ouagadougou Agreement. He advises special envoys of the Secretary-General on conflicts in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America on matters of mediation strategy and process, international law, constitutional review and border delimitation.

His previous experience includes working on border dispute settlement with the African Union and on Sudanese peace talks with the European Union and USAID. Around the time of Kosovo’s declaration of independence he was adviser to the International Civilian Representative there. He has taught negotiations in France and holds a Doctorate in international law from the University of Oxford.
