Using a Gender Lens is Essential to Sustaining Peace: Evidence from Mozambique
This report is the result of a three-year collaboration between the Women, Peace and Security program at Columbia University and Associação Sócio-Cultural Horizonte Azul (ASCHA), a Mozambican feminist civil society organization based in Maputo.
Through a participatory visual methods project with young women and girls from several neighborhoods of Maputo, Mozambique, this report suggests that peace, as it is traditionally understood, should include everyday human security and wellbeing, beyond issues of war and armed conflict.
The women’s voices featured in this report underscore the urgency of recognizing the various forms of insecurity that women and girls experience, particularly in public spaces—from how girls are treated in schools, to how safe women feel walking through their communities. They also echo the recent push around the globe, by academics and policymakers alike, who have demonstrated key links between the gendered problems of everyday safety, structural inequality and sustainability, and durable peace and security for all.
Por meio de um projeto visual participativo com mulheres de vários bairros de Maputo, Moçambique, este relatório sugere que a paz, como é tradicionalmente entendida, deveria incluir questões de segurança humana e bem-estar quotidianos, para além da guerra e do conflito armado.
As vozes das mulheres apresentadas nesse relatório enfatizam a urgência de se reconhecer as várias formas de insegurança que mulheres e raparigas experimentam, principalmente em espaços públicos – desde como as raparigas são tratadas nas escolas, até quão seguras as mulheres se sentem caminhando por suas comunidades. Estas também ecoam o recente ímpeto ao redor do mundo, tanto por académicos como por formuladores de políticas públicas, que provaram a existência de ligações estruturais fundamentais entre os problemas relacionados a género na segurança quotidiana, a desigualdade estrutural, a sustentabilidade e a paz duradoura para todos e todas.
