The School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Public Affairs at the University of Baltimore invites applications for an Assistant Professor faculty position (tenure-track) in the M.S. program in Negotiations and Conflict Management to begin in August 2017 (contingent upon final budget approval). Candidates with the ability to teach in allied programs, including the M.A. in Global Affairs and Human Security and/or the B.A. programs in Government and Public Policy and International Studies, will be given preference. This position requires traditional classroom instruction at the graduate level but may also involve limited undergraduate and/or online instruction.
The Negotiations and Conflict Management (CNCM) program is seeking highly qualified applicants whose experience and scholarship complements the department’s existing offerings. Although the scholarly specialization for this position is open, individuals that can contribute expertise related to ethnic and cultural factors in conflict, mediation and negotiation in a cross-cultural context, nonviolence, social change processes, peacebuilding, and conflict transformation will be given special consideration. Individuals with experience facilitating experiential learning and/or practicum courses will also be given preference. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and/ or course development related to the above mentioned content areas will be viewed favorably.
Candidates for this position must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment in the Conflict Management field, broadly construed to include conflict analysis and resolution, conflict management, conflict transformation, peace and conflict studies, peacekeeping operations, peace education, or a similar course of study. Applicants with degrees in related fields of study appropriate to the Conflict Management discipline (e.g. political science, international relations, public administration, public policy, and allied social science disciplines) with expertise in the above-mentioned areas are also encouraged to apply. Diverse methodological and regional areas of expertise, both domestic and international, will be considered. Candidates should have a record of scholarly activities appropriate to the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) and demonstrate the potential for quality university instruction and service to the profession and the university. Candidates who are A.B.D. will be considered pending successful completion of their dissertation defense by August 15, 2017.
The successful candidate will be joining the well-established graduate program in Negotiations and Conflict Management (CNCM), an applied, cross-disciplinary Masters of Science program in the School of Public and International Affairs. The CNCM program is designed to expose students to conflict management in a variety of settings from the interpersonal to the international. The program’s 42-credit curriculum is delivered through a series of applied courses that enable students to examine the link between conflict management theory and practice and prepares them for post-graduate success in a variety of settings in which conflict management skills are necessary.
With 3 full-time faculty members and several highly regarded adjunct faculty, the CNCM program has approximately 100+ degree-seeking students and is now in its 17th year. The School of Public and International Affairs has twenty distinguished full-time faculty with advanced degrees from an array of distinguished universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and George Mason University. The School is home to a nationally accredited Masters of Public Administration program. The College of Public Affairs is also home to several award-wining faculty members that are recipients of the University System of Maryland’s highest faculty distinction, the USM Board of Regents Award, a Fulbright Scholar, and a recipient of the prestigious Paul F. Lazarsfeld Evaluation Theory Award from the American Evaluation Association.
In addition to the School of Public and International Affairs, the College of Public Affairs houses the Schools of Health and Human Services and Criminal Justice. The ability to offer courses and conduct research relevant to the College’s three schools is an advantage. The College of Public Affairs is also home to The Schaefer Center for Public Policy – an applied research unit – through which grant related work can be undertaken.
