Problem-solving in the Arab World: Constructive Engagement and Action
As part of a series of initiatives intended to share ideas, perspectives, approaches and challenges to building prosperous societies in the Arab world and beyond, the Advanced Consortium on Cooperation Conflict and Complexity (AC4) at Columbia University has been working on a series of initiatives around Problem-solving in The Arab World to increase collaboration and research in the area, as well as to contribute to the growth of theory and practice on constructive engagement in the region. In 2005, colleagues working in conflict resolution and peace-building through national and international non-governmental organizations in Arabic-speaking countries (Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Palestine, Syria), expressed an urgent need to have science-based resources on constructive engagement made available in Arabic. Soon after, we began to organize to meet this need by obtaining the Arabic-language rights for our Handbook of Conflict Resolution: Theory and Practice, a book edited by our Co-Director, Dr. Peter T. Coleman, Professor and the Director of the ICCCR, and Eric Marcus, faculty at the ICCCR and MS program in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. Since then, we have completed the process of translating the book into Arabic, and are eager to promote collaboration and research in this area.
