A live conversation on mining’s place in Canadian foreign policy between Shefa Siegel, Lead Environment & Policy Researcher at Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment, Professor Jeffrey Davidson from Queen’s University, and Member of Parliament John McKay.
The question for this debate — the second part of the CIC’s Resourceful Canadian series is: Can the mineral and hydrocarbon industries help lead the world toward peaceful and sustainable economic development? Can mining be the new peacekeeping?
As we examine ways that Canada can sustainably develop mineral and energy resources overseas, some of the questions we will address are:
Can sustainability be a strategic imperative for mining companies?
Is a lack of perceived value from mining companies driving countries toward resource nationalism?
Can there be such thing as value-based mining?
Can mining companies pool sustainability efforts?
What multiplier effects do communities see from mining?
The Live Chat will begin at 9:45 am on Thursday, June 21st. Access the live chat here.
