Peace Talk: Peacebuilding in the Field Amid Complex Emergencies – June 6, 2012

The New York Peace Institute and the Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation (PACT) group cordially invite you to a presentation on Wednesday, June 6th 2012, by Professor T. Debey Sayndee, Director of the Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation at the University of Liberia. Professor Sayndee will discuss the multifaceted conflict dynamics in West Africa by drawing on examples from his years of experience working in Liberia and Sierra Leone. As an associate professor, peacebuilder, trainer, radio broadcaster, public speaker, mediator, and peace, security, and development consultant, Professor Sayndee is in a unique position to provide insight into the complexities of conflicts in specific West African contexts.

Speaker

Professor T. Debey Sayndee is the Director of the Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation (KAICT) at the University of Liberia. Professor Debey has worked for many years on the complex nexuses of the conflicts in West Africa, particularly Liberia and Sierra Leone. He served as consultant for the UN, University of Wyoming, and Women’s Campaign International, on peace, security and development issues.

He has worked in civil society for many years and is a strong advocate on women’s rights issues and the quest for a Peace-able world. Sayndee is a public speaker, trainer, radio broadcaster, and mediator. In addition, he has contributed several publications, and is currently in the process of editing his latest book: A History of Liberia’s Future. He has served as a visiting scholar for the University of Michigan’s African Presidential Scholars Program (2010/2011), where he researched social cohesion after violent conflicts in Liberia, using lessons learned in Rwanda, South Africa, and Ghana. Professor Sayndee has also established links with King’s College and the University of Bradford while working on a collaborative project titled: Re-inventing Higher Education in Post-war Liberia for Conflict Transformation and Peace-building.

Professor Sayndee completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Liberia, and post graduate studies (MSc) at the University of Wales, United Kingdom. He has also studied at the post graduate level at Uppsala University (Sweden), Jos (Nigeria), and Conhill (London), in conflict research, development, and leadership respectively.
