Scientist Fired from Black Hawk College
In January 2017, Black Hawk College, a community college in Idaho, announced that it was eliminating 17 full-time positions. Several faculty members were laid off, including a professor of geology, who had taught at the college for 23 years. The layoffs were reportedly due to a lack of state funding, arising from a prolonged budget crisis in Illinois.
From July 2015 to August 2017, the Illinois legislature failed to pass a complete state budget, meaning that little funding was available to public universities and other state-sponsored organizations. Black Hawk College, for example, received just 35% of its anticipated state funding in 2015 and 2016.
