Scientific Consensus on Climate Change Rejected by Louisiana Attorney General
During a press conference on February 9, 2018, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry described the scientific consensus that human activities are the primary cause of climate change as a “hoax.” He also denied that climate change is causing sea levels to rise, contradicting the findings of numerous scientific studies.
Following the press conference, Attorney General Landry reiterated his claims in a pair of tweets. The first tweet included a graph showing Antarctic ice core temperature measures and carbon measurements over time. Next to the graph, Attorney General Landry wrote:
“This shows the pattern & variations over the past 400,000 yrs from Antarctic Ice Cores. This pattern repeated long before civilization of man. Yes, climate changes, NO, we’re not the cause. CO2 and Temperature were correlated long before Global Warming!”
This was widely criticized by climate scientists, who emphasized that the available data shows that temperatures have increased rapidly in recent years, and that increase correspondents with a sharp rise in carbon dioxide emissions.
Attorney General Landry’s second tweet included a quote from Nils-Axel Mörner:
“’The sea is not rising and hasn’t in 50 years. If there is any rise this century it will not be more than 10cm, with an uncertainty of plus or minus 10cm.’ -Nils-Axel Mörner, former chairman of the International Commission on Sea Level Change”
Mr. Mörner is a well-known climate denier, who rejects the scientific consensus that human activities contribute to climate change. His views have been rejected by mainstream climate scientists.
