Proven Scientific Theories Questioned by Alabama Legislature

On May 2, 2017, the Alabama legislature passed House Joint Resolution 78 which critics say will give teachers greater scope to question proven scientific theories, particularly in the areas of climate change and evolution. The resolution declared “biological evolution,” “human cloning,” and “global warming” to be controversial theories and urges state and local education authorities to allow science teachers “academic freedom” to discuss alternatives. According to the lead sponsor of the resolution, Representative Mack Butler, it is intended to encourage the teaching of creationism in Alabama public schools.
