NSF Budget Cuts Proposed for FY20

On March 11, 2018, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released the Trump Administration’s proposed budget for the U.S. Government in Fiscal Year (FY) 2020. The proposal would reduce total funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF) by $700 million or 9 percent compared to FY2019 levels. Certain NSF programs would see larger funding cuts. For example:

• NSF’s Office of Polar Programs (OPP), which supports research related to the polar regions, would have its funding cut by $98 million or 19.6% (compared to FY2018 levels).
• NSF’s Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences, which supports collaborate research in the areas of astronomical science, chemistry, materials research, mathematical sciences, and physics, would have its funding cut by $248 million or 16.5% (compared to FY2018 levels).
