Research Grants Cancelled by HHS

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) cancelled $213.6 million in funding for teen pregnancy prevention programs and research. The cancellation will affect five-year grants awarded to more than eighty institutions to find scientifically valid ways to help teenagers make healthy decisions that avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Update: On March 20, 2018, NBC reported that the cancellation was directed by political appointees at HHS. Documents obtained by NBC indicate that the political appointees ignored concerns expressed by career staffers, including Evelyn Kappeler, who led the Office of Adolescent Health at HHS for eight years.
