EPA Giving Preference to Industry-Backed Science

On November 10, 2017, the Washington Post reported that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was ignoring the advice of its own scientists, and instead accepting advice from industry-backed scientists. The report cited, as an example, EPA’s proposal to reconsider emissions standards for certain freight trucks based on research conducted by Tennessee Tech University, which was underwritten by the biggest truck manufacturer challenging the standards.

Update: On April 11, 2018, it was reported that EPA relied on industry-funded studies to justify proposed revisions to its emissions standards for model year 2022-2025 light-duty vehicles. The studies, which were funded by the American Petroleum Institute, downplay the health effects of vehicle emissions and are widely considered “outside of mainstream scientific findings.”
