Discredited Scientific Study Cited by Tennessee State Representative

In mid-2017, Tennessee State Representative Diane Black advocated for the weakening of federal regulations, controlling emissions from glider trucks (i.e., new truck bodies fitted with older engines). To justify weakening the regulations, Representative Black relied on a discredited scientific study, conducted by researchers at Tennessee Technical University. The study, which found that glider trucks do not produce higher emissions than those modern engines, was funded by a glider truck manufacturer. It has been disavowed by Tennessee Technical University, which has expressed concerns regarding its “methodology and accuracy,” and launched a scientific misconduct investigation into the researchers.
