DOD’s FY18 Budget Request Cut by Trump Administration

On May 23, 2017, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued President Trump’s proposal for the Budget of the U.S. Government for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018. The budget proposes significant cuts in funding for climate and other environmental research at various federal agencies. The only federal agency to see an increase in funding for climate and environmental research is the Department of Defense (DOD). Notably however, while the budget includes $347 million in funding for climate and other environmental research at the Department of Defense (DOD), this represents less than one percent of the $54.3 billion requested by DOD. Overall, under the budget, DOD research funding would increase by approximately four percent (compared to FY 2017 levels), but some programs would see significant cuts. For example, the Army’s Defense Research Services, which undertakes research in the engineering, physical, information and life sciences, would see a nine percent cut in funding.
