Climate Science Questioned by West Virginia Official

At a public meeting on April 27, 2017, the Secretary of West Virginia’s Department of Environmental Protection Austin Caperton appeared to question the scientific consensus on climate change. In response to a question about the impact of climate change on West Virginia, Secretary Caperton said: “I personally have mixed emotions about climate change and the science its based upon.” He then suggested that the science is not trustworthy, saying: “I don’t trust any report that’s written by 1000 people.” It appears that he was referring to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which are widely seen as providing an objective, comprehensive, and balanced review of climate science.
