U.S. Coal in the 21st Century: Markets, Bankruptcy, Finance and Law

In January 2016 the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that for the first time in more than 30 years it will conduct a comprehensive review of the federal coal leasing program. The purposes of the review are to ensure the government receives a fair return on coal leases and that it properly accounts for the environmental externalities of coal mining—Including its climate impacts. This workshop will bring together leading experts from academia, government, law and finance to discuss recent developments in coal markets, key factors influencing future directions in those markets, the status of bankruptcy proceedings and re-organization in the sector, and the problem of legacy liabilities.
