Susan Biniaz was a State Department lawyer from 1984 to early 2017.

She served as a Deputy Legal Adviser with wide-ranging responsibilities, as well as the lead climate lawyer and a climate negotiator from 1989 until her departure.

In addition to being on the adjunct faculty at Columbia Law School, she has been on the adjunct faculty at the University of Chicago Law School and Yale Law School and was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Energy Policy Institute of Chicago.  She is currently a Senior Fellow at the UN Foundation and an Associate Researcher at the French think tank IDDRI.
