Teaching of Unproven Scientific Concept Supported by Arizona State Official

In November 2017, at a Republican candidate forum in Arizona, the state Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas argued that school children should be taught alternatives to the theory of evolution. Superintendent Douglas expressed particularly support for the teaching of “intelligent design.” In response to a question, she reportedly said:

“Should the theory of intelligent design be taught along with the theory of evolution? Absolutely.”

The theory of “intelligent design,” which is unproven, asserts that the universe and living things were created by some intelligent entity and cannot have arisen through an undirected process such as natural selection.
