The 2014 Climate Models Calendar
Climate science is often portrayed as dry and tedious. That’s left some climate scientists and communicators wondering how to make it more relatable to the general public. Do you use scientific facts? Do you tell a story? Do you use humor?
Rebecca Fowler, a science writer for Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and Francesco Fiondella, the communications officer at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society thought the answer might be a dash of all three. That’s why they enlisted 13 scientists as collaborators, including C+S faculty Tony Barnston and Alessandra Giannini, for the 2014 Climate Models calendar. The calendar features those 13 real, live climate modelers (get it?) showing off their style and work in the same frame. Fowler and Fiondella say the project is intended to “humanize science and increase understanding of current climate research.”
The models pun provides the humor, but the calendar also includes facts about the scientists’ research and bios explaining how they got into studying climate in the first place. With these elements, Fowler and Fiondella hope to make science more fun and accessible.
