Consultation on Land and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
Date: October 19-20, 2017
Location: Columbia Law School, Jerome Greene Annex
CCSI hosted a consultation for the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights regarding the Committee’s draft General Comment on land and economic, social, and cultural rights. The consultation, which brought together stakeholders from around the world, covered a range of topics, including the protection of tenure security, gender dimensions of land governance, the rights of indigenous peoples and other traditional groups, large-scale resettlement, and corruption. Three members of the Committee attended the event, alongside representatives from indigenous communities, social movements and civil society, and the private sector. Public consultations on the draft General Comment are expected to take place in 2018. This consultation is an example of the ways in which CCSI works to advance land rights protections, particularly for the most vulnerable of land users.
