Extractive Sector: Sustainability and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (Massive Open Online Course)
Together with the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), CCSI is pleased to announce the launch of a massive open online course (MOOC) on the Extractive Sector: Sustainability and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. This MOOC, (delivered in English, with video transcripts/subtitles and all other course materials in Spanish) is designed for the participation of large numbers of geographically dispersed learners, with a special focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. It stretches over 6 weeks and covers a range of topics including the challenges and opportunities that come with extractive industries, key political economy considerations, legal frameworks, resource economics, environmental risks, community rights, artisanal mining and the management and investment of revenues for sustainable development. Each week, students have access to recorded video lectures led by a faculty of world-class experts and practitioners, including Prof. Sir Paul Collier and Prof. Jeffrey Sachs. In addition to key background readings for review and engagement in online forums and quizzes to consolidate learning, students have the opportunity to ask questions to experts in pre-recorded Q&A sessions scheduled throughout the course. Access to the course requires a reliable internet connection to be able to view the videos.
This MOOC was adapted from a 12-week course titled Natural Resources for Sustainable Development: The Fundamentals of Oil, Gas and Mining Governance (delivered in English, with video transcripts also available in French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic).
